Radon and wet basements: the connection nobody mentions
Water and radon enter a basement through the same joints, cracks and pits. Any work that changes that boundary changes both — and nobody selling drainage mentions the second one.
Two problems share one route. Water in soil moves through pore space, and so does radon — a radioactive gas produced by the decay of uranium in rock and soil. Both enter a house at the boundary between the building and the ground: the joint where slab meets wall, cracks, service penetrations, and the sump pit.
Which means any work that changes that boundary changes both. Nobody selling basement drainage will bring this up, and it is not usually because they are hiding anything. It is simply a different trade.
The four places the two problems intersect
An open sump pit is a radon entry point
It is a deliberate opening into the sub-slab space where soil gas accumulates, and it is one of the first things a radon mitigator looks for. A sealed pit with a gasketed lid and a sealed discharge penetration costs very little more at installation time and removes the issue. Ask for it by name; it is not standard on every quote.
Interior drainage opens the slab perimeter
Done well — channel sealed at the top, pit capped — interior drainage is neutral or beneficial, because you have effectively built a sub-slab collection network. Done as an open trench around the room, it can measurably increase radon entry, because you have built a very efficient path for soil gas as well as water.
The infrastructure is shared
Sub-slab depressurisation — the standard radon fix — is a pipe from beneath the slab to a fan discharging above the roofline. If the slab is already being cut for drainage, adding that pipe costs a fraction of what it costs as a standalone job later. A full system runs roughly $1,200–$3,000; the rough-in during other work is far less.
Sealing a basement can raise the concentration
Encapsulation, vapour barriers and air sealing all reduce air exchange. If radon entry stays the same and ventilation falls, indoor concentration rises. It is entirely possible to solve a moisture problem and worsen a radon one without noticing, because you cannot smell it.
What the soil tells you, and what it does not
Radon potential tracks parent material. Uranium-bearing glacial till, black shales and certain granites run high; coastal sands run low. That is why the upper Midwest and the Appalachian shale country have high predicted concentrations while the Atlantic coastal plain does not, and it is the basis for the expectation we show on the radon lookup.
What it does not tell you is your house. Zone maps were made for planning; individual houses inside a low-zone county test high routinely, because the concentration depends on your slab, your pressure regime and your ventilation as much as on the geology. The official county designations and state contacts are at the EPA. Only a test in your own house means anything.
What to actually do
- Test now. $15–$30 for a short-term kit. EPA's action level is 4 pCi/L, and it suggests considering action between 2 and 4.
- Put it in the drainage contract. Sealed sump lid, sealed drainage channel, and a capped rough-in for a radon pipe if the slab is coming up anyway.
- Retest after the work, and after any later change to the envelope — encapsulation, new windows, air sealing.
- Keep the results. Dated test results are useful at sale, in both directions.
None of this is a reason to avoid fixing a wet basement. It is a reason to spend an extra hundred dollars and one paragraph of the contract while someone already has the slab open.
Questions people actually ask

Is a radon rough-in worth it while the slab is open?
Almost always. Adding the sub-slab pipe while the concrete is already cut costs a fraction of retrofitting a full system later. Even if your test comes back low, the rough-in is cheap insurance and it is attractive to a future buyer.
