Crack tracker
The one measurement that settles whether a crack matters is whether it is moving. Three dates and a set of callipers beats any opinion. This stores your readings in your own browser — nothing is sent anywhere.
How to measure so the numbers mean something
- Pick one point and mark it. Pencil, two marks across the crack, and write the date on the wall next to it. Measuring a different point each time produces noise that looks like movement.
- Use callipers or a crack comparator card, not a tape measure. You are looking for tenths of a millimetre.
- Measure at the same time of year if you can. Concrete and soil both move seasonally; a summer-to-winter comparison exaggerates.
- Photograph it with the ruler in frame. If it does go to an engineer, dated photographs with a scale are the most useful thing you can hand over.
- Three months minimum, a year is better. Everyone wants to decide today. Nothing about a stable crack requires deciding today.
